UTube

I ended up watching animal videos....and it was interesting to leap around by viewing the most viewed, top rated etc. Then I tried to find all of the octupus videos by the various tags....had some fun. I found that the podcast websites and utube were not set up in the best way to seach. I had to bumble around to find poetry reading specifically in SC.
But now I am totally confused about which would be better to link to your blog- a video or a podcast of a poetry reading? I initally thought a podcast, but I am having a hard time getting any of the podcasts to play on my computer today. And the videos are loading quickly....any help?

Podcasts

I played with the first two links trying to search for a podcast of the SC poet laureate Marjory Wentworth but could not find one to watch. So it might be a good thing for CCPL to do in the future. I then started to search for south carolina libraries and watched some interesting podcasts. For the BLOG:

I recently added pictures of one of the writing workshop events and have been interested in linking podcasts of poetry readings to the blog. We also had an interesting author panel discussing spirituality in literature...which would have been a great podcast.

Zoho Planner

I recently used zoho planner to create a webspace that the reference staff could use to login and share information about the programs they do. The main document was a programming guide that I put together in which staff can add notes to or edit based on their experiences. Other folders were created such as "pr materials" which includes signs and flyer templates for staff to use; program ideas that staff have and contact information; notes about individual programs including attendeance numbers; upcoming planned programs. This site is for staff to share there experiences and expertise with programming.

Wiki

I may not direct patrons to wikipedia for information, but I do use it myself. I do a monthly Ask A Question Board at the main library and it is often on odd or catchy questions that I try to answer. I usually check out and then verify the info from wikipedia because it often has one or to weird facts that I didn't find elsewhere in my research.
As I was reading about using wikis, I thought that maybe I should have used the wiki format instead of the zoho planner when displaying online the Reference Programming Guide. Since I do a bunch of programming at the library, I constructed a guide about my experiences and the ins and out of hosting a successful program. I also opened up a few folders for fellow reference staff to post upcoming events, program ideas, and program outcomes....as well as edit the program guide itself. But since the information is just for the main ref staff, a wiki would not be appropriate after all.
Another consideration would be for the Monthly Fiction Writing Group to use a wiki to post their writings, critique online, and ask questions. The moderators of the group set up a facebook page, but most of the group has not set up an account or had reservations and/or problems with getting their home computers to work with facebook.
So overall it is nice to have another avenue to display info online and I love the section about the library being the community go to point online- we should do that for charleston county!

Social Networking

I have a personal myspace account that has been up for over a year. I use that account mostly for out of town friends and to keep up with my favorite bands. I just started a facebook account for the members of the fiction writing group that meet at the library each month. That is more of a work related network for me and I really just use that account to answer library related questions and to try to promote my work blog. I did look over the more international social networks on the techtrac's blog to see what the differences were. I usually like to look at the animal videos and the most popular ones are universal for all social networks in general.

Flickr

Since my old laptop is dying, I uploaded all my digital pix to Picassa (google's online pix storage site). My family uses Picassa and it was the easiest way to share photos. But Flickr has some interesting photo editing options and I enjoyed playing with the different mashups. I created a magazine cover, but the trading card looked the best. I had a fun time browsing through the SC Libraries photos and some old postcards of libraries....got lost in searching for photos. I will have to try the mashup which you draw something and then search for like phots....should be interesting. I am going to go to Picassa and see what kind of fun mashups they might have added. I am attaching my playing card of our new puppy.

I browsed around technorati and found some of the top 100 blogs interesting and had some fun looking for pix and videos about rottie puppies. I will probably go ahead and read my co-workers posts about this quest, so I can see what highlights about Technorati and Delicious that I must have missed.

Delicious

I am always looking for good books to read, mostly fiction. I usually ask my friends that read and have similar tastes in books. So i set out to find some read alikes or good book recommnedations. First I tried read alikes and then ended up with readers advisory as a good tag. Readers Advisory came up with 463 tags, but i could not figure out how to have them listed by the most "saved" sites....since they seem to be the better ones. I did find the site The Library Thing and this site looks promising....so I might go ahead and create an account and try it out.

Using Bloglines

This is a very useful tool to compile all the blogs in one place. It also eats up a bunch of time since you end up looking at more and more blogs-lol.

IM

I like the IM reference service that we provide. When answering a question through IM services, I often catch myself making spelling mistakes. Luckily, IM is an informal was to communicate. I also have found that I need to send a message every minute or so, since they are waiting and might think that they have been forgotten. I think it is a good tech tool for kids and teens to access reference services.

Seven and 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners

As a reference librarian, I find that I continually search for new resources to assist me in all aspects of my life. So I would say the the easiest habit for me would be to "create your own learning toolbox." The hardest habit to form is having patience when problems come up, so "viewing problems as challenges" would be one habit that I need to work on.

How to bring in patrons for your programs!

I have had the best success by teaming up with a community leader. As far as types of programs to choose, they know what their subset of the community is looking for and they already know how to contact these people.
